The Nigerian government has rejected allegations that Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) supported the recent failed attempt to overthrow the government in Niger Republic.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, described the claims circulating on social media as false, irresponsible and deliberately intended to mislead the public and damage Nigeria’s reputation.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Enikanolaiye reiterated that Nigeria has consistently opposed military takeovers and would not support any attempt to change a government through unconstitutional means.
He said Nigeria remained firmly committed to democracy, constitutional governance and the promotion of peace and stability across West Africa, the Sahel and the wider African continent.

The minister pointed to the Federal Government’s earlier position on the situation, contained in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on August 30, 2026. He said Nigeria had expressed serious concern over the developments in Niger and advocated a peaceful, inclusive and participatory process aimed at restoring stability and constitutional order.
According to Enikanolaiye, Nigeria’s position was also shaped by its close relationship with Niger, noting the two countries’ long-standing historical, cultural and fraternal ties.
He maintained that Nigeria’s interest was to see Niger achieve lasting peace, security, democratic governance and sustainable development, alongside stability across the Sahel region.
The minister stressed that Nigeria would not condone unconstitutional changes of government under any circumstances.
“While Nigeria is a proud and committed member of ECOWAS, it is unfair, mischievous and entirely false to suggest that Nigeria endorses or condones the military coup,” he said.
Enikanolaiye called on Nigerians both within the country and abroad to disregard videos, posts and other narratives circulating online that seek to portray Nigeria or ECOWAS as supporters of the failed coup attempt.

He said such materials were deliberately designed to create confusion, fuel division and mislead the public.
The minister further reaffirmed Nigeria’s adherence to the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance and the African Union’s policy of rejecting unconstitutional changes of government.
He added that Nigeria would continue working with ECOWAS, the African Union and other members of the international community to strengthen democratic institutions, uphold the rule of law and advance peace and security throughout the region.
