UK Court Remands Nigerian Man Over Alleged Murder of Compatriot in London

A court in the United Kingdom has ordered the continued detention of 32-year-old Maxwell Oguanaya after he was charged with the murder of a fellow Nigerian, Taiwo Ekerin, following a violent incident in southeast London.

According to the Metropolitan Police, Ekerin, 41, sustained fatal injuries during an altercation on Lewisham High Street in the early hours of May 24.

Police officers were said to have responded to reports of a disturbance at about 4:40 a.m. and found Ekerin suffering from a serious head injury. Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was rushed to hospital for specialist care.

Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, Ekerin died from his injuries on May 30. Police said specially trained officers are supporting his family as investigations continue.

Detectives arrested Oguanaya, of Eastfield Road, Enfield, on June 4 on suspicion of murder. He was formally charged the following day and appeared before Ealing Magistrates’ Court, which remanded him in custody pending further proceedings..

The defendant is scheduled to return to court on June 9 as the criminal case progresses through the British judicial system.

Police also disclosed that a second man, aged 34, was arrested on June 5 in connection with the incident. Authorities said he remains under investigation while detectives continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the altercation.
