For nearly 25 years, football coach has dedicated his life to developing young talents in south-west London. Today, he is reaping the rewards not only as a coach but also as a proud father, with both of his children representing England at the highest level of international football.

His son, , and daughter, , have made history as the first brother and sister in the modern era to play senior international football for England.

Reflecting on their achievement, Nigel said he still finds it difficult to believe that both of his children have reached the pinnacle of the sport.

“Over and over I say to myself, ‘Can I believe it?’ And it’s reality, it’s happening,” he said. “The whole James family is very proud of what the children have achieved. Your children doing what they want to do for a living and reaching the highest level in football is a very proud moment.”

Reece is expected to play a key role for England at the ongoing World Cup, and Nigel recalled his early days at the family academy in Wimbledon, where football was centred on enjoyment and personal development.

“Reece used to train with us on Friday evenings with his friends. He would score goals and enjoy himself. It was like a youth club environment where children could simply play and have fun,” he said.

Nigel’s academy has produced several successful footballers, including , who is set to play in the Premier League. Beyond football, the coach said the academy focuses on building character and confidence in young people.

“We don’t just produce players; we produce good human beings and confident young men and women. Sport helps them make friends, develop confidence and discover opportunities that can shape their future,” he added.

The Wimbledon-based academy is part of Play Their Way, a coaching initiative supported by , which promotes child-centred coaching and participation in sport.

According to Phil Smith, executive director for the sporting system at Sport England, Nigel’s success with his children demonstrates the value of putting enjoyment first. Smith said many children do not participate in enough sport and that creating a fun environment is essential to keeping young people active.

As England continue their World Cup campaign, Nigel remains optimistic about the team’s chances. He plans to travel to the United States for the knockout stages and believes England can go all the way.

Asked for his prediction, he responded confidently: “Win. All the way. It’s coming home.”
