No fewer than 18 farmers have been killed and several others injured following a fresh attack on Kawel village in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attackers, suspected to be armed assailants, reportedly stormed the farming community and opened fire on residents, leaving scores dead and many others wounded.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen invaded the village unexpectedly, unleashing violence that forced residents to flee for safety. Several homes and properties were also said to have been affected during the attack.
The latest incident is the latest in a series of violent attacks that have continued to plague communities in Plateau State, particularly in rural farming settlements.
Local sources disclosed that security personnel and emergency responders were deployed to the area following the attack, while efforts were ongoing to assess the full extent of the casualties and damage.
Community leaders have expressed concern over the recurring violence, urging the government and security agencies to strengthen protection for vulnerable communities and prevent further attacks.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Government had yet to issue a detailed official statement on the incident. However, authorities are expected to commence investigations into the killings.
