The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has secured a court order to detain a former minister as investigations continue into allegations of certificate forgery and related offences.
The anti-graft agency said the order was obtained to enable investigators complete their probe after the suspect was taken into custody for questioning. According to the commission, the detention is in line with due process and is intended to facilitate ongoing investigations into the allegations.
The ICPC said the investigation followed the receipt of petitions and the preliminary review of documents relating to the certificates allegedly presented by the former public office holder. It noted that investigators are examining the authenticity of the academic credentials and other relevant records as part of the inquiry.
Officials of the commission maintained that obtaining a remand order does not amount to a finding of guilt, stressing that the former minister remains entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence until the conclusion of investigations and any subsequent judicial proceedings. They added that the suspect would be afforded every opportunity to respond to the allegations.
Legal practitioners say allegations involving forged academic credentials are treated seriously under Nigerian law because public officers are expected to meet strict standards of integrity and accountability. They noted that where sufficient evidence exists, the courts ultimately determine criminal liability after a full trial.
The development has generated widespread public interest, with many Nigerians calling for a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation.
