The Department of State Services (DSS) has released a medical doctor associated with the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, following his brief detention, an incident that has drawn renewed attention to the ongoing legal proceedings involving the separatist leader.
The doctor, whose identity was confirmed by members of Kanu’s legal team, was reportedly taken into custody by DSS operatives shortly after visiting the IPOB leader. The circumstances surrounding the arrest were initially unclear, prompting concerns from Kanu’s lawyers, who demanded his immediate release and questioned the basis for the detention. Reports indicated that the doctor was later released without any formal charge.
Counsel to Kanu described the arrest as unnecessary and called on security agencies to respect the rights of medical professionals carrying out their duties. The legal team maintained that healthcare providers attending to detainees should not be subjected to intimidation or harassment, arguing that access to medical care is a fundamental right guaranteed under the law.
Although the DSS has not publicly explained the reason for the temporary detention, the development has generated reactions among supporters of Kanu and civil rights advocates, who say the incident raises fresh questions about the treatment of individuals connected with the IPOB leader during the course of his trial.
The latest incident comes as Kanu’s terrorism trial continues before the Federal High Court in Abuja. His legal team has repeatedly raised concerns over his welfare, including access to medical care and consultations with his doctors and lawyers, while the Federal Government has maintained that his trial is being conducted in accordance with the law.
Observers say the doctor’s release may ease immediate concerns over the incident, but the episode is likely to feature in future legal arguments as Kanu’s defence continues to challenge aspects of his detention and treatment. The case remains one of Nigeria’s most closely watched criminal proceedings, attracting significant legal, political and public interest.
