Nigeria has recorded a major academic milestone after a four-member team of students emerged champions at the 2026 Spelling Bee World Cup in Shanghai, China, winning the Gold Award in the Middle School Group category. The victory marks Nigeria’s first appearance at the global competition and has been hailed as a testament to the country’s growing academic excellence.
The victorious team comprised Oluwadamilola Adeolu of St. Lawrence Metropolitan College, Ado-Ekiti, Abdurrahman Yusuf and Maryam Yusuf of Ar-Raheem International College, Ilorin, and Chinedu Okediachi of Madonna International Schools, Asaba. The students outperformed competitors from Asia, Africa, North America and other regions to secure the coveted gold medal.
The competition, held from July 14 to 19 in Shanghai, brought together some of the world’s brightest young spellers. Organisers of the Nigeria Spelling Bee announced the achievement, describing it as a historic breakthrough for the country and a reflection of the hard work and determination of the students and their teachers.
The team’s journey to the world stage began with the Nigeria Spelling Bee competition before progressing to the African Spelling Bee Championship in Harare, Zimbabwe, where they earned qualification to represent both Nigeria and the African continent at the World Cup.
Among the team members, Oluwadamilola Adeolu had earlier distinguished herself by winning the 2026 African Spelling Bee Junior Championship, while Abdurrahman Yusuf also excelled at the continental contest. Their performances helped position Nigeria as one of Africa’s leading academic competitors ahead of the global event.
The victory has attracted widespread commendation from educators and stakeholders, who described it as evidence that Nigerian students can compete successfully with their peers from across the world when given the right opportunities and support. They urged governments and private organisations to invest more in education and talent development.
The triumph is expected to inspire more young Nigerians to pursue academic excellence while reinforcing the country’s reputation on the international education stage.
