No fewer than 20 people have been killed in a fresh attack by armed bandits on communities in Zamfara State, underscoring the persistent insecurity that continues to plague Nigeria’s North-West despite ongoing military operations against criminal gangs.
Residents and local officials said the attackers, who arrived in large numbers on motorcycles, stormed the affected villages in the early hours of Wednesday, opening fire indiscriminately and forcing many residents to flee into nearby forests to escape the assault. Several houses were also set ablaze during the raid.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen operated for hours without resistance before retreating into surrounding forest areas. Apart from those killed, several others sustained varying degrees of injuries, while an unspecified number of residents were reported missing following the attack.
Local authorities attributed the latest violence to heavily armed criminal groups that have continued to terrorise rural communities through mass killings, kidnappings for ransom, cattle rustling and the destruction of farmlands, despite intensified security operations across the region.
The attack has heightened fears among residents, many of whom have repeatedly appealed to the Federal Government and security agencies to establish a stronger military presence in vulnerable communities. Community leaders warned that recurring attacks have disrupted farming activities and worsened the humanitarian situation in the state.
Security agencies said troops and other personnel had been deployed to the affected area to restore normalcy, pursue the attackers and prevent further assaults. They also assured residents that efforts were ongoing to track down those responsible and bring them to justice.
Zamfara remains one of the states hardest hit by armed banditry in Nigeria’s North-West, with attacks on villages, highways and farming communities becoming increasingly frequent in recent years despite sustained military offensives against the criminal groups.
The latest killings are expected to renew calls for a more coordinated security strategy involving federal and state authorities, as well as improved intelligence gathering, to stem the growing wave of violence and protect vulnerable rural communities.
