A deepening dispute over the leadership of FIFA has divided football authorities across the world, with some national football associations calling for the resignation of FIFA President Gianni Infantino while others have rallied behind him ahead of the 2027 FIFA presidential election. The controversy has become one of the biggest governance issues facing world football.
The latest disagreement follows criticism over a proposal involving the commercial rights of FIFA competitions, which some football administrators argued was not handled with sufficient transparency. The controversy prompted Norway Football Federation President Lise Klaveness to publicly state that Infantino no longer enjoys the institutional confidence required to continue leading the world football governing body.
The issue has also exposed growing divisions among football’s continental bodies. While UEFA and some members of CONCACAF have expressed strong reservations over FIFA’s recent governance processes, a number of football federations from Africa, Asia and Latin America have reaffirmed their support for Infantino.
Several football associations argued that any decision on FIFA’s leadership should be left to the organisation’s 211 member associations during the next presidential election rather than being driven by pressure from individual confederations. Supporters of the FIFA president maintain that the organisation has expanded football development programmes and increased investment in member associations under his leadership.
FIFA has acknowledged that communication surrounding the proposal could have been handled better but insisted that no governance rules were breached. The governing body also reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and consultation with member associations on major commercial decisions.
Football analysts believe the dispute is likely to dominate discussions in the months leading to the FIFA Congress, where governance, commercial strategy and the future direction of world football are expected to feature prominently. They noted that despite the criticism, Infantino continues to enjoy considerable backing from many football federations outside Europe.
Observers say the outcome of the debate could shape FIFA’s governance structure and commercial policies for years to come, with member associations expected to play a decisive role in determining the future leadership of the global football body.
