The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has apologised to President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians following the Super Falcons’ failure to secure an automatic ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The apology followed Nigeria’s 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Cameroon at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), a result that ended the Falcons’ hopes of defending their continental title.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau expressed regret on behalf of the federation, the Super Falcons and the entire Nigerian football family over the setback.
The federation acknowledged the disappointment caused by the defeat, particularly after the team had entered the tournament as defending champions and one of Africa’s leading women’s football sides.
Nigeria’s defeat also means the Super Falcons must now pursue an alternative route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. The team is scheduled to face South Africa in a crucial play-off on Thursday, with qualification for the tournament now at stake.
The NFF said it remained committed to supporting the team and ensuring that the players and technical crew were adequately prepared for the next stage of the qualification process.
Meanwhile, Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu has defended goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie following criticism over the goal conceded against Cameroon. He also indicated that changes to the team could be considered ahead of the decisive play-off.
The latest developments have intensified calls for reforms within Nigerian football, with stakeholders divided over whether the forthcoming NFF elections should proceed as scheduled or be suspended in view of the country’s recent setbacks.
The federation’s apology therefore comes at a critical moment for Nigerian football, as the Super Falcons face the immediate task of securing a World Cup place while the NFF confronts renewed scrutiny over the management and development of the national teams.
With the South Africa play-off approaching, the Falcons now have little room for error as they seek to rescue their World Cup campaign and restore confidence among millions of Nigerian supporters.
