North Korea has fired a ballistic missile towards the sea off the Korean Peninsula, days before the United States and South Korea are scheduled to begin major joint military exercises.
The missile launch, reported on Wednesday, came amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula and renewed concerns over North Korea’s growing missile capabilities. The projectile was fired towards waters off the peninsula’s eastern coast, according to South Korean authorities.
The launch came shortly before the annual US-South Korea military exercises, which Pyongyang has consistently condemned as preparations for an invasion. North Korea has historically responded to such drills with missile tests and other military demonstrations.
The latest launch is expected to increase tensions between Pyongyang and Washington and Seoul, particularly as the allies prepare to strengthen their military coordination. The latest development is likely to attract renewed international attention to efforts aimed at containing North Korea’s nuclear and missile programmes.
Diplomatic efforts to persuade Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear ambitions have made limited progress in recent years, while the country has continued to expand its military capabilities.
