Nigerian troops have rescued a kidnapped man in Kogi State and recovered an AK-47 rifle during an operation against criminal elements in the state.
The operation was carried out by troops deployed to the area as part of ongoing efforts to tackle kidnapping and other forms of insecurity across Kogi communities, according to reports published Tuesday.
The rescued victim was reportedly found in the custody of the kidnappers after soldiers moved in on their hideout. He was subsequently reunited with his family following the operation.
The troops also recovered an AK-47 rifle from the criminals, providing a further indication of the level of firepower available to kidnapping gangs operating in the area.
Security agencies have intensified operations across parts of North-Central Nigeria as criminal groups continue to target communities, travellers and individuals for ransom.
The latest operation is significant because Kogi occupies a strategic position connecting several parts of the country, making security along its roads and rural communities important to both residents and travellers.
Military authorities have continued to call for cooperation from local communities, particularly through the provision of timely intelligence that could help security personnel locate criminal hideouts and prevent attacks.
The successful rescue also comes amid renewed public concern over the growing incidence of kidnapping in the country. Recent attacks in Niger State, including the reported abduction of scores of people during coordinated raids, have further highlighted the scale of the security challenge.
For the rescued victim, however, the operation has brought an immediate end to a terrifying ordeal. For the security agencies, the recovery of the weapon and the successful rescue provide another opportunity to pursue the wider network behind kidnapping operations in the region.
