Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for deepened unity among Africans on the continent and in the diaspora, emphasizing the critical need to preserve Africa’s cultural heritage and expand development opportunities for people of African origin.
In her official message commemorating the 2026 International Day for People of African Descent, Senator Tinubu advocated for increased strategic investments in education, economic empowerment, and human well-being to enable individuals of African descent worldwide to achieve their full potential.
The 2026 global observance was themed “People of African Descent: Recognition, Justice, and Development.”
Reflecting on the significance of the day, the First Lady noted that the event provides an important platform to honor the rich legacy and significant contributions of African communities to global advancement.
“Today, as we commemorate the International Day for People of African Descent 2026, with the theme, ‘People of African Descent: Recognition, Justice, and Development,’ we celebrate the rich heritage and remarkable contributions of people of African descent to the progress of humanity,” Senator Tinubu stated.
She stressed that beyond celebration, the annual event must serve as a reminder of the collective responsibility to safeguard human rights and build an inclusive environment where all individuals can thrive.
“This day also serves as a reminder of the need to renew our collective commitment to protecting human rights and creating opportunities for every individual to realise their full potential,” she said.
Senator Tinubu further urged African leaders and citizens to forge stronger alliances with global diaspora populations, ensuring that cultural values and historical identity are protected for future generations.
“As Africans, we must continue to preserve our rich cultural heritage, strengthen unity across the continent and the diaspora, and invest in the education, empowerment, and well-being of our people,” she added
