Police Rescue 66-Year-Old Kidnap Victim in Edo Forest

The Edo State Police Command has rescued a 66-year-old man, Obareki Emmanuel, from kidnappers in Ibeakuma Forest in the state, in another operation highlighting the continuing security challenge posed by criminal gangs operating around rural communities.

Emmanuel was reportedly rescued by a joint team of security operatives after the victim was located inside the forest where his abductors had taken him. Security personnel also recovered items believed to be connected with the kidnapping operation.

The operation followed intelligence gathered by security agencies concerning the activities of suspected kidnappers operating around the Ibeakuma area.

The successful rescue comes amid intensified security operations across several states as security agencies step up efforts to disrupt kidnapping networks and rescue victims before ransom payments are made.

The Nigeria Police Force said recently that its intelligence-led operations conducted in July and August resulted in the arrest of 1,334 suspects and the rescue of 383 kidnapped victims nationwide. The operations also led to the recovery of 175 firearms and more than 3,790 rounds of ammunition.
The Edo operation therefore forms part of a wider pattern of police interventions against kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.

Police authorities have repeatedly urged residents, particularly those living around forest communities and isolated routes, to provide timely information about suspicious movements to security agencies.

The latest rescue also underscores the importance of intelligence gathering and rapid response in kidnapping cases, particularly where victims are moved into forests and other difficult-to-access locations.

The police have continued investigations into the circumstances surrounding Emmanuel’s abduction and the identities of those responsible, with efforts expected to focus on tracking the fleeing members of the gang.
