2027: Opposition Coalition Faces Tough Test Over Single Candidate

Nigeria’s opposition parties appear to be moving closer to forming a common political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections, but the emerging alliance is now facing its biggest challenge — deciding who will lead the proposed coalition into the presidential contest.

The development follows renewed efforts by opposition figures and parties to build a united front against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

The coalition’s latest push has been driven by the G-100 process, which has brought six opposition parties to the negotiating table and opened discussions on the possibility of producing a single presidential candidate.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has also backed the idea of a single opposition candidate, adding momentum to efforts to challenge the APC’s dominance ahead of the 2027 election.

However, political observers say agreeing to work together may prove easier than agreeing on who should fly the coalition’s presidential ticket.
Several prominent opposition figures have presidential ambitions, while their political constituencies and regional support bases are also factors that could complicate negotiations.

Among the major figures associated with the emerging opposition movement are former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate Peter Obi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and other political leaders seeking to build a platform capable of challenging the APC.
The APC, meanwhile, has already settled its presidential ticket, with President Tinubu expected to seek another term in office.

The opposition’s challenge is therefore not merely to form an alliance but to create an organisation capable of translating its combined political strength into votes.

Analysts say the coalition will ultimately be tested by whether its leading politicians can accept the outcome of negotiations if they are not chosen as the presidential candidate.

With the 2027 election approaching, the opposition’s ability to resolve the leadership question could determine whether its much-discussed coalition becomes a serious electoral force or remains another alliance of politicians with competing ambitions.
