Nigeria Confirms Ebola Case, Tracks 44 Contacts

By Stephen Simon

Nigeria’s first confirmed Ebola case in more than a decade has triggered emergency public health measures, with authorities identifying 44 contacts for monitoring and follow-up.

The case involves a woman who travelled from Uganda to Abuja through Addis Ababa on October 5. According to reports, she was diagnosed after developing symptoms, raising concerns about possible exposure before the infection was detected.

The Federal Government has isolated the patient and activated contact-tracing procedures to identify people who may have come into contact with her. Health workers and other individuals considered potentially exposed are among those being monitored.

The development comes as an Ebola outbreak originating in the Democratic Republic of Congo spreads across several African countries. The outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which there is no approved specific vaccine or treatment.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has called an emergency virtual meeting of African health ministers for October 28 to coordinate the regional response.

Nigeria’s experience in managing previous outbreaks is expected to be important in containing the latest case. However, public health experts have stressed the need for rapid diagnosis, effective surveillance and cooperation among health agencies.

Authorities are urging Nigerians to rely on verified public health information and report suspected symptoms or exposure to appropriate health officials rather than spread unconfirmed claims.

The immediate priority is to identify and monitor contacts, prevent further transmission and establish whether any additional cases have emerged.
