Dangote Refinery Boosts Petrol Supply as Imports Decline 26%

Nigeria’s domestic petrol supply rose by 39 per cent in August, while imports declined as the Dangote Refinery increased production, according to figures from the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.

The authority’s August 2026 factsheet showed that domestic petrol receipts increased from 25.8 million litres per day in July to 35.9 million litres daily in August.

Over the same period, petrol imports fell from 19.7 million litres to 14.6 million litres per day, representing a reduction of approximately 26 per cent.

The Dangote Refinery recorded average capacity utilisation of 105.21 per cent and produced an average of 41.94 million litres of petrol daily.

Despite the improvement in domestic supply, the country’s petrol stock sufficiency stood at 22.9 days, below the regulatory benchmark of 30 days.

The report also listed the Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna refineries operated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited as not producing during the period covered.

Actual petrol consumption, measured by volumes trucked into the domestic market, stood at 41.5 million litres daily, compared with the 50-million-litre benchmark.

This left a shortfall of 8.5 million litres per day. The figures highlight the growing contribution of domestic refining to petrol supply, while underscoring continuing concerns over national stock levels and the operational status of state-owned refineries.
