Tinubu Launches Re-Election Bid in Kaduna, Defends Economic Reforms Amid Hardship

By Stephen Simon

President Bola Tinubu has officially launched his re-election campaign ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, seeking another term amid persistent economic hardship and lingering security concerns across the country.

The campaign was flagged off at a rally in Kaduna on October 24, where the president made his case directly to supporters and urged Nigerians to grant his administration another four years in office.

At the heart of Tinubu’s pitch is a defense of his economic reforms, most notably the removal of the petrol subsidy and sweeping changes to the foreign-exchange system.

Those policies, according to the president, have begun to stabilize the economy and improve key fundamentals, and he argued they are laying the groundwork for long-term growth rather than short-term relief.

However, the reforms have also brought sharp pain for ordinary Nigerians, with soaring fuel prices, a weakened naira, and rising food costs fueling widespread frustration and eroding household purchasing power.

Beyond the economy, the administration continues to face questions over security, as persistent violence and instability in several parts of the country remain a central concern for voters.

With the 2027 race now formally underway, Tinubu’s Kaduna launch signals the start of a campaign that will test whether Nigerians credit his reforms for future gains—or hold him accountable for the hardships they have endured so far.
