President Bola Tinubu has charged judicial officers across the country to ensure that justice is dispensed swiftly, fairly and without prejudice, warning that delays and compromise in the justice system pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
The President gave the charge while commissioning the new Court of Appeal Abuja Division Complex in Dakibiyu, Abuja. He was represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who said the administration remains committed to strengthening the judiciary through improved infrastructure and institutional reforms.
Addressing the justices, Tinubu said Nigerians expect the courts to remain the last hope of the common man by dispensing justice that is blind to status, tribe, religion or financial standing. He stressed that restoring public confidence in the judiciary depends largely on timely and impartial adjudication of cases.
The President noted that the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal had operated for years from inadequate facilities, describing the completion of the new complex as a demonstration of his administration’s commitment to the rule of law and the dignity of the nation’s justice system.
He commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for completing the project within the agreed timeline, saying the modern facility would provide judges and court personnel with a conducive environment for the efficient administration of justice.
Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), described the project as a major milestone for the judiciary, adding that the Tinubu administration has continued to prioritise funding and support for the justice sector to enhance access to justice and judicial independence.
The newly inaugurated complex comprises multiple courtrooms, judges’ chambers, conference facilities, a law library and administrative offices. Stakeholders say the development is expected to improve the efficiency of appellate proceedings and help reduce delays in the hearing and determination of appeals.
