Manchester United have completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea in a deal worth an initial £48 million, with a further £2 million payable in performance-related add-ons. The Premier League club confirmed that the 22-year-old has signed a contract until June 2031.
Santos described the move to Old Trafford as the fulfilment of a childhood dream, saying he was eager to embrace the responsibility of representing one of the world’s biggest football clubs. The Brazil international expressed his determination to contribute to United’s ambitions as preparations begin for the new season.
The midfielder joined Chelsea in 2023 but spent time on loan at Vasco da Gama, Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg before returning to Stamford Bridge for the 2025/26 campaign. He went on to make 43 appearances for Chelsea last season, impressing with his energy, passing range and ability to control the tempo of matches.
United believe Santos will add quality and depth to their midfield following the departure of veteran Brazilian midfielder Casemiro at the end of last season. His arrival also comes at an important time after Uruguay international Manuel Ugarte suffered a knee ligament injury during the recent FIFA World Cup, leaving the club short of options in midfield.
Although Santos has earned six senior caps for Brazil, he was not included in the Selecao squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nevertheless, his performances at club level have continued to earn widespread praise, with many observers viewing him as one of the brightest young midfielders in South American football.
Manchester United officials said the signing reflects the club’s strategy of investing in talented young players capable of making an immediate impact while also forming the core of the team for years to come. Santos is expected to join his new teammates immediately for pre-season training ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League campaign.
