Manufacturers Urge Government to Fast-Track Economic Reforms

Manufacturers have called on the Federal Government to accelerate the implementation of economic reforms and targeted support measures, warning that persistent inflation, high energy costs and foreign exchange challenges continue to weigh heavily on Nigeria’s industrial sector. Industry leaders said urgent action is needed to improve the operating environment and sustain local production.

The appeal comes amid growing concerns over rising production costs, with manufacturers noting that many businesses are struggling with the high prices of raw materials, electricity, transportation and financing. They warned that unless these challenges are addressed, some firms may be forced to scale down operations, reduce their workforce or pass additional costs on to consumers.

Operators in the sector also urged the government to strengthen interventions aimed at improving access to foreign exchange for manufacturers that rely on imported machinery and industrial inputs. They argued that although recent reforms have improved liquidity in the foreign exchange market, more needs to be done to ensure businesses can obtain dollars at competitive rates to support production.

According to industry stakeholders, increasing support for local manufacturing would not only reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported goods but also create jobs, boost exports and contribute to economic diversification. They stressed that a vibrant manufacturing sector remains critical to achieving sustainable economic growth and improving the country’s trade balance.

Manufacturers further called for greater investment in infrastructure, particularly in electricity, roads, rail transport and port operations, saying efficient logistics would significantly reduce production costs and improve the competitiveness of locally produced goods in domestic and international markets.

Economic analysts observed that while recent government reforms have shown signs of improving investor confidence, businesses are looking for faster implementation of policies that directly impact production and industrial growth. They added that consistent policy implementation would encourage both local and foreign investment in the manufacturing sector.

Stakeholders also appealed to the government to maintain regular consultations with the private sector to ensure that economic policies respond to the realities facing businesses. They said stronger collaboration between government and industry would help identify practical solutions to the country’s economic challenges while supporting long-term industrial development.

Observers believe that as Nigeria continues its economic reform agenda, the performance of the manufacturing sector will remain a key indicator of the country’s ability to diversify its economy, create employment and achieve inclusive growth in the years ahead.
