Sanwo-Olu Orders Immediate Repairs Of Deteriorating Lagos Roads

By Stephen Simon

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the Lagos State Public Works Corporation to commence immediate road reconstruction and rehabilitation across the state.

The directive is aimed at addressing deteriorating road infrastructure and taking advantage of the dry season to accelerate repair work.

The General Manager of the corporation, Tokunbo Ajanaku, disclosed the development on Thursday during an inspection tour of ongoing projects.

The planned intervention comes amid continuing concerns over the condition of roads in several parts of Lagos, where potholes and damaged road surfaces contribute to traffic congestion and longer commuting times.

Road conditions are particularly important in Lagos because of the state’s high population density and its position as one of Nigeria’s major commercial centres.

Poor road infrastructure can increase vehicle maintenance costs, delay the movement of goods and affect the productivity of businesses and commuters.

The governor’s directive is expected to place renewed emphasis on the rehabilitation of roads requiring urgent attention.

The corporation will be responsible for coordinating the relevant repair operations and ensuring that work progresses during the period of favourable weather conditions.

However, residents will be looking for visible improvements and timely completion of projects rather than announcements alone.

Effective monitoring will also be necessary to ensure that public funds are properly utilised and that completed roads meet acceptable quality standards.

The state government’s challenge will be to sustain road maintenance beyond immediate repairs and develop a system that prevents infrastructure from deteriorating rapidly after rehabilitation.
Improved roads could help ease transportation difficulties and support economic activity across the state.
