NBA SURULERE GEARS UP FOR ELECTIONS

Guidelines and rules for the biennial elections of the Surulere branch of the Nigerian Bar Association have been released. Addressing members of the branch during the monthly meeting of the branch on 20th May, the Election Committee revealed that the elections into the Executive committee would hold on Friday 26th June between 10am and 3pm at the monthly general meeting venue. Led by the Chairperson, Prof F. E. Nlerum, the Committee further noted that on 21st May 2026, the sale and submission of hard copy nomination forms would commence and end on 4th June. She added that the elections would fill ten (10) positions in the branch including the Chairman and Assistant secretary. The nomination forms go for thirty-five thousand Naira (N35,000) for the chairman, thirty thousand Naira (N30,000) for other positions except the Assistant secretary which goes for twenty-five thousand Naira (N25,000). The rules and guidelines for the elections are pursuant to Sections 16, 14 and 6 of the NBA uniform bye-laws for branches in the third schedule of the NBA constitution 2025.

The Anene Nwadukwe-led Executive Committee are at the twilight of their constitutional 2-year term having been elected in 2024 as the pioneer Executives of the Branch. NBA Surulere was created during the tenure of Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau SAN as the President of NBA. To be eligible to vote and be voted for, in addition to other specific guidelines, a member or candidate must have paid his branch dues and Bar practice fees for three consecutive years preceding the elections as well as attendance at branch meetings for a minimum of five (5) times in the twelve (12) months preceding the nomination. Some members put questions to the Election Committee during the meeting. Members who spoke to our correspondent after the meeting expressed confidence that the elections would be rancour free. They hailed the pioneer Executive Committee for laying the foundation for subsequent Committees to build on stressing that young branches always faced initial challenges.
