The Lagos State Government has commenced emergency drainage and flood control operations across affected parts of the state following heavy rainfall that inundated major roads, residential communities and commercial areas, disrupting movement and economic activities.
State officials said the intervention is aimed at clearing blocked drainage channels, desilting waterways and preventing further flooding as the rainy season intensifies. Residents in flood-prone areas have also been urged to remain vigilant and comply with safety advisories issued by emergency agencies.
The downpour left several roads temporarily impassable, with motorists stranded for hours while some homes and business premises were flooded. Emergency responders were deployed to monitor vulnerable locations and assist residents affected by rising water levels.
The government attributed much of the flooding to indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage systems, warning that the practice continues to obstruct the free flow of stormwater and increase the risk of flooding in many communities.
Authorities said enforcement teams would intensify monitoring to ensure compliance with environmental sanitation laws, while ongoing infrastructure projects aimed at improving stormwater management across the state would be accelerated.
Residents have been advised to avoid driving or walking through flooded roads, relocate from areas at high risk where necessary and report blocked drains or other flood-related emergencies to the appropriate government agencies for prompt intervention.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through sustained investment in drainage infrastructure, environmental sanitation and flood mitigation measures, while calling on residents to support efforts to keep Lagos clean and resilient during the rainy season.
