Tottenham Smash Transfer Record with £100m Capture of Tonali

Sandro Tonali has completed a club-record move from Newcastle United F.C. to Tottenham Hotspur F.C. in a deal worth up to £100 million, making the Italy international midfielder the most expensive signing in Tottenham’s history.

The Premier League club announced the signing on Monday, confirming that it will pay an initial fee of £92.5 million, with a further £7.5 million in performance-related add-ons. The transfer surpasses Tottenham’s previous record signing and underlines the club’s determination to rebuild its squad under new manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Tonali, 26, joined Newcastle from A.C. Milan in 2023 and became a key figure in the Magpies’ midfield. He helped the club win the League Cup in 2025 and played a crucial role in Newcastle’s run to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 last season before agreeing to the move to North London.

Speaking after completing the transfer, the Italian international expressed his excitement at joining Spurs, insisting the North London club was always his preferred destination despite reported interest from several other European clubs. He said discussions with De Zerbi about the club’s ambitions and style of play convinced him to make the switch.

For Newcastle, the transfer represents the second-highest fee the club has ever received for a player, behind the sale of Alexander Isak. The club is expected to reinvest the proceeds as it prepares for another demanding domestic and European campaign.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen Tottenham’s midfield significantly as the club seeks a dramatic improvement after finishing 17th in the Premier League last season. Club officials believe Tonali’s experience, technical ability and leadership qualities will be central to their bid to return to the upper reaches of English football under De Zerbi’s management.
