Atiku Clinches ADC Presidential Ticket With Landslide Victory, Signals New Twist In 2027 Race

Former Vice President has emerged as the presidential flagbearer of the (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general election, following a landslide victory in the party’s primary election.

The result, announced after the party’s internal voting process, showed a total of 3,113,599 registered ADC members, out of which 2,527,977 participated in the exercise.

In the final tally, Atiku secured 1,846,370 votes to defeat his closest rival, former Minister of Transportation, , who polled 504,117 votes, while former presidential aspirant Mohammed Hayatudeen scored 177,120 votes.

The outcome marks a significant turning point for the ADC, which now shifts from internal consolidation to full-scale national political engagement ahead of a highly anticipated election cycle.

Political observers say the development positions the party as a more competitive force in the emerging 2027 landscape, particularly as Nigeria continues to grapple with economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and declining purchasing power.

With Atiku as its candidate, the ADC is expected to leverage his decades of political experience, national recognition, and extensive political network across the country to build early momentum in what is expected to be a tightly contested presidential race.

Analysts note that in Nigeria’s political environment, name recognition and established structures often play a decisive role in shaping early campaign dynamics long before the official election season begins.

However, the party now faces the task of translating internal victory into a unified national movement. Strengthening state structures, consolidating party stakeholders, and converting visibility into electoral strength will be critical to its long-term competitiveness.

Attention is also expected to shift toward internal cohesion within the ADC, as the integration of key stakeholders becomes essential following a highly competitive primary.

Supporters of other aspirants, including Amaechi and Hayatudeen, are expected to play strategic roles in broadening the party’s base and strengthening its coalition ahead of the general election.

The ADC is also expected to project its post-primary message around unity, shared purpose, and national renewal, positioning itself as an alternative platform responding to widespread public concerns over governance and economic conditions.

While the ruling (APC) is expected to dismiss the development or question opposition cohesion, political analysts say the emergence of a more structured opposition platform introduces a new layer of competition into the 2027 presidential race.

For the ADC, however, the real test begins now—transforming electoral victory at the primary level into a nationally viable campaign capable of challenging established political dominance.
