Bloodbath in Plateau: Eight Killed as Gunmen Turn Birthday Celebration into Scene of Horror

What began as an evening of laughter, music and celebration ended in bloodshed on Sunday night after gunmen stormed a birthday gathering in Plateau State, killing at least eight people and leaving several others battling for their lives.

The attack occurred in Gwon-Ajang village in Foron District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where residents had gathered to celebrate the birthday of a community member when armed assailants struck without warning.

Witnesses said the attackers invaded the community at about 10 p.m. and opened fire indiscriminately on the crowd, sending terrified residents scrambling for safety. By the time the shooting stopped, bodies lay scattered across the celebration ground while the wounded cried out for help in the darkness.

Community sources said more than 10 people sustained serious injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals, where some victims remain in critical condition.
Residents described the attack as one of the most heartbreaking incidents to hit the area in recent months.

“This was supposed to be a happy occasion,” a community member said. “Families came together to celebrate a birthday. Nobody imagined that within minutes, people would be running for their lives and carrying the bodies of loved ones.”

The attack has once again plunged the community into mourning and renewed fears among residents who say they have become accustomed to living under the constant threat of violence.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident and expressed concern over what he described as renewed attacks on vulnerable communities in the state. He said at least eight persons lost their lives while several others sustained injuries.

As grieving families prepared to bury their loved ones, community leaders called on security agencies to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.

For many residents, however, the tragedy is another painful chapter in a cycle of violence that has left countless families broken and communities traumatised.

Plateau State has witnessed repeated attacks over the years, particularly in Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, Riyom, Bassa and other local government areas where armed groups have targeted rural communities, leading to hundreds of deaths, displacement of residents and destruction of property.

Only months ago, dozens of people were reportedly killed in separate attacks across communities in the state, highlighting the persistent security challenges confronting the North-Central region.

The latest attack has once again raised questions about the effectiveness of security measures in vulnerable communities and the ability of authorities to prevent recurring violence.

For the families of those killed on Sunday night, however, the debate over security failures offers little comfort.
Instead of celebrating a birthday and creating happy memories, they are now preparing funeral arrangements and struggling to come to terms with the sudden loss of fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and friends whose lives were cut short in a moment of unimaginable violence.

As the community mourns, residents say one question continues to haunt them: how many more lives must be lost before lasting peace returns to Plateau State?
