SHAIBU CALLS FOR UNITY IN NIGERIAN FOOTBALL, HONOURS HENRY NWOSU’S LEGACY

Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, has called on football stakeholders across the country to embrace unity, collaboration and collective responsibility as essential tools for advancing the growth and development of Nigerian football.

Shaibu made the appeal during a Night of Tribute organised in honour of late Nigerian football legend, Henry Nwosu, at Saint Finbarr’s College, Akoka, Lagos.

The NIS boss attended the event alongside members of the Student Union Government and officials of the institute’s management team, a presence that reflected the institution’s commitment to celebrating sporting icons and promoting leadership values among young Nigerians.

Speaking at the event, the former Deputy Governor of Edo State stressed that greater cooperation among football administrators, players, coaches and other stakeholders was critical to the future of the game in Nigeria.

According to him, unity remains one of the most important ingredients for sustainable growth and success in the country’s football sector.

He urged all stakeholders to set aside differences and work together in the collective interest of the sport, emphasizing that a united football community would be better positioned to nurture talent, strengthen institutions and create opportunities for future generations of athletes.

Shaibu also conveyed the condolences of the National Institute for Sports to the family, friends and associates of the late Nwosu, describing him as an outstanding ambassador of Nigerian football whose contributions to the sport left an enduring mark.

He said the former Green Eagles star distinguished himself not only as a talented footballer but also as a mentor and role model who inspired countless young players throughout his career.
The NIS Director General encouraged aspiring athletes and sports administrators to emulate the discipline, commitment and leadership qualities that defined Nwosu’s life and career, noting that his legacy should continue to serve as a guide for future generations within the sporting community.

The tribute event attracted former footballers, sports administrators, coaches, family members and admirers who gathered to celebrate the life and achievements of the football icon.
Participants paid glowing tributes to Nwosu’s immense contributions to Nigerian football and reflected on the lasting impact he made both on and off the field.

Widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders of his generation, Nwosu played a pivotal role in the development of Nigerian football and was a member of the celebrated national teams that helped shape the country’s football history. His influence extended beyond his playing days, earning him widespread respect across the Nigerian sporting community.

The event served not only as a celebration of a remarkable football career but also as a reminder of the values of dedication, service and unity that many speakers said were embodied by the late football legend.
