The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned the Managing Director of an oil and gas company and several associates before a Federal High Court over an alleged N691.7 million money laundering scheme.
The defendants were brought before the court on multiple counts bordering on money laundering, conspiracy and the alleged diversion of funds suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.
According to the anti-graft agency, investigations revealed that the funds were allegedly moved through a network of corporate and personal accounts in transactions believed to have been designed to conceal their origin and ownership.
The EFCC told the court that the accused persons engaged in a series of financial transactions involving substantial sums of money without complying with provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act.
Prosecutors further alleged that part of the funds was transferred through company accounts and subsequently withdrawn in a manner that raised suspicions about the legitimacy of the transactions.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read before the court.
Following the arraignment, counsel to the accused persons applied for bail, arguing that their clients would not interfere with investigations or evade trial. The prosecution, however, urged the court to impose conditions that would ensure their availability throughout the proceedings.
After hearing submissions from both sides, the trial judge granted bail under specified conditions and adjourned the matter to a later date for the commencement of trial.
The EFCC said the prosecution forms part of its broader efforts to combat financial crimes, money laundering and corruption in both the public and private sectors.
Legal analysts say the case highlights the increasing scrutiny being placed on financial transactions within the oil and gas industry, one of Nigeria’s most strategic economic sectors.

The anti-corruption agency has repeatedly stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in business operations, warning that individuals and organisations found to have violated financial regulations would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
