President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has defended his administration’s economic reforms and pledged intensified efforts to combat terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.
Speaking during activities marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebration, the President said the difficult economic measures introduced by his government were necessary to stabilise the economy and lay the foundation for sustainable growth.
Tinubu acknowledged the hardships many Nigerians have experienced since the implementation of key reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of foreign exchange rates. However, he maintained that the policies were designed to correct longstanding structural distortions and place the economy on a stronger footing.
According to the President, early signs indicate that the reforms are beginning to yield positive results in several sectors, including public finance, infrastructure development and investor confidence.
On security, Tinubu assured Nigerians that his administration remains committed to restoring peace and protecting lives and property across the country. He noted that security agencies have recorded significant successes against criminal groups and insurgents in recent months but stressed that more work remains to be done.
The President said his government would continue to provide the military, police and other security agencies with the resources and support required to confront emerging threats and safeguard national stability.
He also called on citizens to support security agencies through timely information sharing and community cooperation, describing security as a collective responsibility.
Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to democratic governance, national unity and inclusive development, urging Nigerians not to lose faith in the country’s future despite prevailing economic challenges.
The President further pledged to deepen investments in critical sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare and infrastructure as part of efforts to improve living standards and create opportunities for citizens.
Political observers say the address reflects the administration’s determination to defend its reform agenda while responding to growing public concerns over the cost of living and security challenges.
The remarks come amid continued debate over the impact of ongoing economic reforms and calls from various stakeholders for measures to cushion their effects on vulnerable households.
