ExxonMobil Unveils $1bn Nigeria Oil Investment

ExxonMobil has announced plans to invest $1 billion in Nigeria’s oil sector through the Usan Infill Project, a major development expected to boost crude oil production and reinforce investor confidence in the country’s energy industry amid ongoing reforms aimed at revitalising the sector.

The investment, approved by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), is expected to increase production from the Usan deepwater oilfield by about 40,000 barrels of oil per day when fully operational. Industry experts say the project is one of the most significant upstream investments in Nigeria in recent years and signals renewed confidence in the country’s petroleum sector.

The Chief Executive of the NUPRC, Gbenga Komolafe, said the project reflects the growing confidence of international oil companies in Nigeria following recent policy reforms and improvements in the regulatory environment. He noted that the investment aligns with the Federal Government’s drive to increase crude oil production, attract fresh capital and strengthen the country’s energy security.

According to the Commission, the Usan Infill Project involves the drilling of additional wells and the deployment of modern technologies to optimise production from the offshore field. The initiative is also expected to create employment opportunities, enhance local content participation and stimulate economic activities across the oil and gas value chain.

The announcement comes as Nigeria intensifies efforts to raise crude oil production above its current levels and meet both domestic and international supply commitments. Government officials have repeatedly emphasised the need to attract new investments into the upstream sector as part of broader efforts to improve revenue generation and stabilise the economy.

Energy analysts say the latest investment could encourage other international oil companies to commit additional capital to Nigerian projects, particularly as the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act continues to reshape the investment climate. They also note that sustained security improvements in oil-producing areas and regulatory certainty will be critical to maintaining investor confidence.
