The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has warned that proposed reductions in its budgetary allocation could undermine the country’s aviation safety oversight, regulatory effectiveness and capacity to meet international standards, urging the Federal Government to sustain adequate funding for the sector.
The aviation regulator said adequate funding remains critical to maintaining Nigeria’s impressive safety record and ensuring effective monitoring of airlines, airports and other aviation service providers. It noted that regulatory activities, including inspections, certification, surveillance and enforcement, require substantial financial resources to comply with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
According to the Authority, budget cuts could affect its ability to recruit and retain qualified inspectors, upgrade technical equipment and carry out regular oversight functions essential to guaranteeing passenger safety. It stressed that aviation regulation is a highly specialised responsibility that requires continuous investment in manpower development and modern technology.
The NCAA also expressed concern that inadequate funding could slow the implementation of ongoing reforms aimed at improving operational efficiency and strengthening confidence in Nigeria’s aviation industry. It maintained that sustained investment in safety oversight would encourage more international airlines and investors to do business in the country.
Industry stakeholders have supported the Authority’s position, arguing that aviation safety should never be compromised by financial constraints. They noted that Nigeria has earned international recognition for complying with global safety standards and urged the government to preserve those achievements through adequate funding of the regulator.
The warning comes as the Federal Government continues efforts to improve transportation infrastructure and attract greater investment into the aviation sector. Experts believe a well-funded regulatory agency remains essential to sustaining growth, improving passenger confidence and maintaining Nigeria’s standing within the global aviation community.
The NCAA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the highest standards of aviation safety, security and consumer protection, expressing confidence that continued government support would enable it to discharge its statutory responsibilities effectively while contributing to the overall development of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
