With just days to the start of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, has confirmed that all outstanding bonuses and financial entitlements due to the Super Falcons have been settled. The move is aimed at ensuring the players focus entirely on the continental championship without the distractions that have affected previous campaigns.
Dikko said the payment of the players’ entitlements reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of national athletes and restoring confidence in the administration of sports. He noted that the prompt settlement of bonuses is part of ongoing reforms designed to create a more professional and athlete-friendly environment.
The NSC chairman stressed that Nigerian athletes should no longer have to contend with delayed payments before representing the country at major international competitions. According to him, the commission is determined to ensure that welfare issues do not overshadow the team’s preparations or performance.
The Super Falcons are chasing a record-extending continental title and have intensified preparations ahead of the tournament. The team’s technical crew has been working on tactical drills and fitness programmes, with expectations high that Nigeria will once again challenge for the championship.
Football stakeholders have welcomed the decision to clear the players’ bonuses before the competition, describing it as a positive step that will boost the team’s morale.
