The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s handling of Nigeria’s security challenges, alleging that the administration lacks the capacity to tackle the country’s worsening insecurity and economic difficulties.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Obi said the continued attacks by terrorists, bandits and kidnappers across different parts of the country reflected a failure of leadership. He argued that Nigerians deserved a government capable of restoring security and improving living conditions.
The former Anambra State governor maintained that the country required competent leadership to confront its multiple crises, insisting that the current administration had not delivered the level of security and economic stability expected by Nigerians.
Obi also dismissed suggestions that President Tinubu’s political support among governors would guarantee victory in the 2027 presidential election, saying the ultimate decision would rest with Nigerians at the polls rather than political endorsements.
Responding to questions on his political future, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to contesting the 2027 presidential election and expressed confidence that Nigerians would make their choice based on competence, integrity and the ability to solve the nation’s pressing problems.
He further rejected allegations of ethnic or regional bias against him, insisting that his political philosophy is centred on national unity, good governance and economic revival. He also called on the Federal Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure that future elections are free, fair and credible.
The comments have added to the growing political debate ahead of the 2027 general election, as parties and prospective candidates continue to position themselves while public discourse remains focused on security, economic reforms and governance.
