The race to choose the next Secretary-General of the United Nations has gathered momentum, with the UN Security Council preparing to hold another informal straw poll later this month as member states intensify consultations over who will succeed António Guterres when his second term expires at the end of the year.
Diplomatic sources said the initial round of informal voting has narrowed the field, with several experienced international figures emerging as leading contenders. However, diplomats cautioned that the process remains fluid and could require several more rounds of voting before a consensus candidate emerges.
Under UN procedures, the Security Council recommends a single candidate to the General Assembly after securing the support of at least nine council members without a veto from any of the five permanent members—China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The next UN chief will inherit a challenging global agenda, including armed conflicts, climate change, humanitarian crises, migration, sustainable development and reforms of multilateral institutions. Observers say the new Secretary-General will also face increasing pressure to strengthen international cooperation amid growing geopolitical tensions.
Diplomats believe regional balance, gender representation, leadership experience and the ability to build consensus among major world powers will play significant roles in determining the eventual winner.
The outcome of the selection process is expected to attract global attention, as the Secretary-General plays a central role in international diplomacy, conflict resolution and humanitarian coordination. Additional rounds of voting are expected before the Security Council forwards its recommendation to the General Assembly.
