Yemen Launches Major Offensive to Retake Houthi-Held Territory

By Stephen Simon

Yemen’s internationally recognised government has launched a major military offensive against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in an attempt to reclaim territory seized by the insurgents.

The offensive, backed by Saudi Arabia, comes after the Houthis made significant advances in areas around the Red Sea and the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Saudi-backed Yemeni forces have reportedly recaptured key positions in the Dhubab district overlooking the Bab el-Mandeb, one of the world’s most important maritime passages.

The development has heightened international concern because the strait is a critical route for global shipping and energy supplies. Any prolonged disruption could have consequences for oil prices and international trade.

Yemeni President Rashad al-Alimi has vowed to continue the military campaign until Houthi forces are pushed out of territories under their control.

The renewed fighting follows the collapse of a fragile ceasefire and comes amid wider tensions involving Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United States and other regional powers.

The escalation has also deepened Yemen’s humanitarian crisis, with civilians once again facing displacement, disruption of essential services and increased risks from renewed fighting.

International observers are closely monitoring the situation because a prolonged battle around the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb could create another major threat to global shipping and further destabilise an already volatile Middle East.
