The Federal Government is intensifying efforts to boost food production and strengthen national food security through increased support for farmers, expansion of irrigation projects and improved access to agricultural inputs, as concerns persist over food prices and supply across the country.
The renewed drive comes as government agencies collaborate with state governments and private sector operators to improve agricultural productivity, reduce post-harvest losses and encourage greater investment in mechanised farming. Officials say the measures are aimed at increasing domestic food production and reducing reliance on imports.
Agriculture experts say improved access to quality seedlings, fertilisers, extension services and affordable credit will be critical to raising farm output. They also stress the need to address insecurity in farming communities, which continues to affect cultivation in several parts of the country.
The Federal Government has also reiterated its commitment to expanding irrigation infrastructure to support all-year farming, particularly in areas with high agricultural potential. Stakeholders believe irrigation development will help reduce the country’s dependence on seasonal rainfall and improve resilience against climate-related challenges.
Farmers’ associations have welcomed the renewed attention to agriculture but have called for timely implementation of government programmes. They urged authorities to ensure that intervention funds and farm inputs reach genuine farmers before the planting season ends.
Analysts note that improving rural roads, storage facilities and agro-processing infrastructure will be essential to reducing food losses and stabilising market prices. They argue that strengthening agricultural value chains will create jobs, improve rural incomes and enhance national food security.
With agriculture remaining a major contributor to Nigeria’s economy, observers say sustained investment, policy consistency and stronger collaboration among governments, development partners and the private sector will be crucial to achieving long-term food security and making food more affordable for millions of Nigerians.
